Drought Remains Widespread Across the U.S.

Drought continues to affect a large portion of the country this week, with 49.65% of the U.S. and 59.24% of the Lower 48 states currently experiencing drought conditions.

That’s a slight improvement of 0.2% compared to last week, but drought coverage remains 12.0% higher than one month ago.

More Than 105 Million People Affected

An estimated 105.6 million people across the U.S. are currently affected by drought, including 102.9 million people in the Lower 48.

The number of people affected has increased 2.0% since last week and 13.4% since last month, showing that despite the small decrease in overall drought coverage this week, impacts have expanded into more populated areas.

Moderate Drought or Worse in 42 States

42 states are currently experiencing Moderate Drought (D1) or worse.

That’s down by one state compared to last week and one state compared to last month.

Why Drought Matters

Drought isn't just about a lack of rain. Prolonged dry conditions can affect water supplies, agriculture and vegetation while also contributing to increased wildfire concerns in some areas.

And the longer-term trend remains important. The area experiencing drought has increased 12.2% over the past month, while the number of people affected has climbed 11.2%.

With flash drought continuing to worsen across parts of the South, we'll be watching upcoming rainfall closely for signs of meaningful improvement.
